PEOPLE & EXPERIENCES (DESIREABILITY)

  • Who is the target audience?
  • What information or tools do they need?
  • What is their customer journey (Customer Experience (CX)) across the Brand's ecosystem?
  • What are their key tasks per touchpoint?
  • What is their experience (Visual Design, Interaction Design, Content, etc.)?
  • How is user feedback collected (User Research, Analytics, SEO and Customer Support) and how is the product (if any) performing?
  • How do we take that feedback and make improvements?

 

BUSINESS (VIABILITY)

  •  How does the product meet the company’s goals?
  • How does the product compare to industry trends?
  • How does the product compare or differentiate to the competition?
  • How will the company make money - work closely with the Business Lead? 
  • If necessary, does the product meet company Legal or Privacy regulations? 

 

TECHNOLOGY (FEASIBILITY)

  • What is the current digital ecosystem (if any - if so, how do we migrate it to the new ecosystem)?
  • What is the new digital ecosystem - work closely with the Technology Lead?
  • What third-party systems do we have to integrate?
  • What software are we going to use to build it (e.g., CMS, Analytics, etc.)?
  • Is Analytics tracking set up appropriately so that we can track the user’s experience and optimize it?

 

PRODUCT MANAGEMENT

  • What is the company’s UX Maturity level?
  • Who are our stakeholders and key decision makers?
  • What is our budget and timeline?
  • What are our resources and their functions?
  • What is our process?
  • What trade-offs are we going to have to make?

1. Meet & Plan

First let’s meet to discuss the problem we are trying to solve. The goal of this phase is to assess the project and resources available, select a process,  create a high-level scope and then determine next steps.

2. Research & Strategy

This is really the foundation of project. Lots of research, collaboration, ideation and validation. The goal of this phase is to know why we are building it, what we are building  and define how we are going to build it.

3. Design & Build

Now the vision becomes a reality. The goal is to take the high-level concept and flesh out the details. The goal of this phase is to create the real world experience of the product and  it’s associated services.

4. Evaluate & Optimize

Now that the product is out in the real world, we can see how it performs. The goal in this phase is to determine if we can optimize and grow (or sunset) the product and it’s associated services

User Experience (UX) Toolkit

A combination of education, agency work experience, and owning and running small consulting business in NYC, I put together a UX Toolkit that helps me move a project through each of the phases mentioned above. It allows me to go into a undefined situation and bring clarity, efficiently.

The UX Toolkit's foundation is based off methodologies such as:  Design Thinking, User Centered Design (UCD) or Human Centered Design (HCD) Methodology, Iterative Design Methodology, Product Development Lifecycle Methodology, and Agile Software Development Methodology. 

It includes a combination of both activities and deliverables to understand the problem, ideate, validate, build, and optimize digital ecosystems. It works for both new and existing products and services.
